Living and Working in China
China has thousands of years of tradition and a diverse and rich cultural and ethnic background. These coped with the recent economic and social progress, the alert rhythm of development, make China a very attractive place to live and work in, for many foreigners. Having a surface of 9,707,000 km², China is a large and geographically diverse territory with landscapes ranging from postcard perfect tropical islands with tall, surreal mountain peaks, to vast metropolis areas, to pristine grasslands and harsh deserts. From an administrative perspective, China is divided into 23 provinces, 4 municipalities, 5 autonomous regions and 2 special administrative regions. The peony along with the plum blossom, are two traditional floral symbols of China. In 1903, the Qing Dynasty declared the peony as the national flower. Currently, the Republic of China designates the plum blossom as the national flower, while the People's Republic of China has no legally designated national flower.
Lifestyle and Culture
Chinese culture is one of the world's oldest cultures. The traditional Chinese culture covers a large geographical region towards the middle and the east of the country with customs and traditions varying greatly between provinces, cities, and even towns. The traditional Chinese way of life advocates the harmony and order among the individual, the family and society. In traditional Chinese culture, the family is the basic unit of society, while individuals are only one part of the family. The culture of the Chinese people, as shown in the conduct of their daily lives, closely adheres to the precepts of Taoism. Taoism is inclined to simplicity in all things. People thoughts and feelings conform to each season as they become one with nature, acting in harmony with everything on earth, and valuing human relationships.
